Reconceptualising Law: ‘Pagan’ Violence and Augustinian Peace

This article explores the idea of violence and peace in Christian theology. In particular, it considers as comprised antagonism alienation, ultimately a ‘pagan’ celebration war death. Even famed pax Romana is itself violent suppression violence. Drawing on Augustine, contrasts this with ontological peace—the harmonious ordering fellowship difference between God humanity, or what John Milbank calls ‘the reconciliation virtue difference’. Though critique historically situated, creates an opportunity to reconceptualise our modern legal system so that we may move from liberal atomistic individualism more community being, governed by law love’.
